walking vs treadmill

Hello

Thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully answer my query. For about 5 months I have been on a diet. I haven't really done anything special as far as working out goes. My main focus was cutting down and in some cases cutting out some foods. I do rarely splurge and have some of the things I have cut down. I've stayed away from cheese, processed sugar, fried things, bread, pasta, fastfood and I have completely cut out all red meat(s). I think it has been quite successful as I have dropped from 228 to 189.

Part of my diet regiment was 20 min a day on a treadmill in addition to a minimum of 45 min of free walking. Recently my treadmill broke and I'm now I'm worried that without it I will start gaining weight again. I need to know if adding 20-25 of free walking will substitute for my treadmill regiment? This probably a dumb question but I need some reassurance from an expert.

I appreciate your time and I look forward to your response.

James
